Science HPGE

Years 4 and 5

This program is designed for local Communities of Schools (COS) and offers an enriching experience for High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students who show a strong interest in science, nature, and conservation. Delivered by the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre (IEEC), the program builds scientific inquiry skills and ecological understanding through authentic, hands-on learning across two years.

Students begin as young ecologists, gaining experience in ecological surveys and species identification while exploring diverse local environments such as wetlands, rainforests, and coastal ecosystems. Through in-school visits, IEEC educators guide students in investigating environmental issues relevant to their local area and in designing creative conservation campaigns that promote sustainability.

In the second year, students conduct real-world fieldwork, analyse data, and present their conservation recommendations to an expert panel. This is an authentic opportunity to apply their learning and make a meaningful contribution to local environmental management.

The IEEC team can collaborate with your COS to design a tailored version of this program that reflects your community’s unique environment and learning priorities. Keep an eye out for Expressions of Interest or contact us to discuss hosting a localised program in your area.
