Project Platypus

Stage 3 Science - HPGE

Project Platypus is an invitation-only program for High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students. It develops intellectual, creative and social-emotional skills through hands-on investigation of local river ecosystems and the habitat needs of the nationally threatened platypus.

Students act as citizen scientists, conducting water quality and macroinvertebrate surveys, assessing riverbank habitats, observing platypus research techniques, and learning about the impact of invasive species. They also engage in creative expression by decorating a canoe to represent river habitats, combining scientific illustration, artwork and conservation messaging.

Project Platypus combines scientific inquiry, creativity and social learning to inspire environmental stewardship and a deeper connection to local waterways.
